Formulation ChemistJuly 24, 2017

There is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Formulation Chemist with expertise in the personal care or biotechnology industries to join our growing team and create groundbreaking new products. We are a biotechnology company seeking to use natural products so we welcome applicants from the personal care industry who are experienced with natural ingredients.

We have identified in our laboratories several key active ingredients that the Formulation Chemist will work with to identify appropriate excipients.  This will ultimately lead to commercial products, published papers, additional patents, and may help procure government grants.

The Formulation Chemist will work in a state of the art facility surrounded by biotechnology thought-leaders.  The salary will be highly competitive with a full benefits package, including significant participation in the employee stock option pool.  In addition, as part of a StartUpNY company, employees will be exempt from NY State Income Tax for 10 years.

As part of a growing team you will learn first-hand how to take a product to market and will benefit from the Company's rapid potential growth.

Candidates must have helped create products marketed in the US and Europe.

Candidates must be legally able to work in the United States.

Candidates must also have:

  • A degree (graduate degree preferred) from a top-tier program
  • At least 5 years of work experience
  • Experience or an understanding of natural products, especially as alternatives to commonly used synthetic ingredients
  • At least 1 product to which they have made a major contribution
  • A thorough understanding of FDA regulations
  • Experience running focus groups
  • Must be comfortable working in a BCL level 2 environment (where work is done with viruses)

Responsibilities:

  • Design multivariate studies of different formulations of a particular product
  • Conduct studies on long-term stability of products
  • Help manage clinical trials, pilot studies, and panel tests to compare reactions of potential customers to proposed formulations
  • Analyze results of experimental studies and write reports for both corporate records and regulatory bodies
  • Develop prototype products for use by focus groups or in clinical trials
  • Assist with scale-up from development to production quantities, in collaboration with chemical engineers and plant production personnel
  • Modify excipients (inactive ingredients) to increase the bioavailability of low-solubility active pharmaceutical ingredients
  • Basic laboratory skills, especially in analytical techniques for product analysis
  • Math and statistical skills for complex experimental design and analysis
  • Teamwork and interpersonal skills, to work with large, interdisciplinary teams
  • Negotiating and the ability to balance competing needs of product quality, ease of production, and cost
  • Ability to analyze experimental results, draw conclusions, and propose logical next steps to reach corporate goals
  • Written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly with other chemists and scientists, as well as nonscientists
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and manage multiple, changing priorities simultaneously

Applied Biological Laboratories Inc. is a fully-funded biotechnology company.  We have developed a patented platform to develop an array of novel therapeutic products.  Our first product targets respiratory disease and is expected to go to market in 2018.

We have produced in our laboratories significant research findings that the Laboratory Technician can build upon to publish papers, file additional patents, or help procure government grants.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs experiments to generate data for product development, patent filings and scientific publications
  • Makes detailed observations, analyze data and interpret results
  • Writes experimental reports, summaries and protocols
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and inventory levels for laboratory supplies
  • Works on assignments that may be complex in nature where judgment is required in resolving problems and making recommendations
  • Performs troubleshooting and calibration of instruments
  • Maintains reagents, equipment and consumables stock, ordering supplies when required
  • Carries out daily tasks, including temperature monitoring, animal checks and general housekeeping within the area

We are looking for a highly seasoned individual, preferably a CPA/MBA with extensive background working in biotech industry, to attend to the financial well-being of our organization by imposing a discipline budgetary tradition, setting up superlative accounting services, maintaining the highest standard of bookkeeping (closing the corporate books monthly), supervising simple and rational payroll and employee bonus/option plans, up keeping and building on a strong relationship with suppliers, establishing a simple and elegant accounts receivable practice and leading financing efforts with the CEO.

Job Duties:

  • Manage treasury, finance, accounting and compliance functions with the necessary processes and internal controls to safeguard the corporate assets and coordinate the preparation of financial statements, financial reports, special analyses and information reports.
  • Accomplishes finance human resource strategies by determining accountabilities; communicating and enforcing values, policies, and procedures; implementing recruitment, selection, orientation, training, coaching, counseling, disciplinary, and communication programs; planning, monitoring, appraising, and reviewing job contributions; planning and reviewing compensation strategies.
  • Plan, develop, organize, implement, direct and evaluate the Company’s fiscal functions from every relevant perspective, while also Manage and supervise financial accounting, tax and compliance departments located in multiple geographies globally with overall responsibility for hiring, promoting, disciplining, or terminating employees.
  • Serve on planning and policy-making committees including the Audit Committee and the Compensation Committee.
  • Develop finance organizational strategies by contributing financial and accounting information, analysis, and recommendations to strategic thinking and direction, establishing functional objectives in line with organizational objectives.
  • Establish finance operational strategies by evaluating trends, establishing critical measurements, determining production, productivity, quality, and customer-service strategies, designing systems including accumulating resources, resolving problems and implementing change.
  • Develop financial strategies by forecasting capital, facilities, and staff requirements, identifying monetary resources and developing action plans.
  • Maintaining a strong relationship with the investment community and recommend and manage Company relationship with outside financial consultants.
  • Provide support to the Board of Directors and shareholders as needed.
  • Provides timely, accurate analysis of budgets and financial reports to assist the CEO and other executives with their responsibilities.  Oversee completion of timely annual audited financial statements. 
  • Optimize the management of bank and deposit relationships and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance Applied Bio’s cash position on a broad overall basis and manage cash flow investment risk and yields.
  • Ensure compliance with all tax reporting requirements including income tax, franchise tax, sales tax, and employment taxes.
  • Coordinate with appropriate legal counsel relating to financial and corporate governance compliance and risk assessment matters.
  • Enhance and/or develop, implement and enforce policies and procedures of the organization by way of systems that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the Company.

Chief Financial Officer Skills and Qualifications:

CPA and/or MBA with 8 plus years of experience with background working in biotech and direct-to-consumer based industries. Skill set should include: financial Planning, strategy, managing profitability, strategic planning, vision, quality management, promoting process improvement, forecasting, corporate finance, developing budgets, financial skills, dealing with complexity.
